PROFESSOR RAPPAPORT | FUN FACT
The element Mercury
Hg
Known as quicksilver because of its ability to flow and move up and down in thermometers; however, at -40 it is not quick. It’s so cold it doesn’t move.
PROFESSOR RAPPAPORT | FUN FACT
Which is colder, -40°F or -40°C?
The answer is that they are both registering the same temperature!
This is because the temperature scales move at different rates.
If you remember the slope of the line formula from basic algebra this will become clear.
F = 9/5 (C) + 32
At -40° both slopes of the line intersect at one point making them equal in value - and equally chilly!
